Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter."Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
Thank you for allowing to understand Jesus' sacrifice for me once again. Jesus journeyed into the deepest pit of despair hours before His cruxification. In Gethsemane, He repeatedly prayed that "the cup" would pass away (Matt26:36~). Jesus Christ did not just die for our sins; He
became our sin ("God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." 2Cor5:21). Furthermore, Jesus knew the consequences of accepting mankind's evil. God's holiness prevented Him from being in the presence of sin. Therefore, the Father would have to separate Himself from the Son. Jesus had always enjoyed perfect oneness and relationship with God. To contemplate a wrenching rejection and separation must be terrifying. I cannot imagine the rejection from my own father or anyone who's dearest to me, imagine how terrifying how it would be for Jesus and our heavenly Father. In fact, Jesus would become sin and be separated from the Father, if that's what was required to save mankind. For a while in the garden, He pleaded for another route to our redemption. However when it was clear that the Father's answer was "No, this is the only way," Jesus obediently sacrficed Himself. Jesus Christ sacrificed more than His life. He exchanged perfection for wickedness and holy union for separation. The Saviour did this so we could be transformed into righteous men and women with an eternal future. No wonder all of heaven exalts him.
Understanding Jesus's three times prayers in Gethsemane before taking up His cross. We knew that we have our own cross to bear, right in front. God understands we need guidance and the only way to reach it, is through prayers and pray in His will. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation". From the scriptures, we know God will respond in our prayers, when the time is rite, we have to get up and take up our cross, WITH Jesus. (v42 "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."). Jesus's second prayer shows a response to heavenly Father's answer - a decision, an action to be carried out, a sacrifice to be made, a responsibility to be fullfilled. And the third time, Jesus said the same thing. The "cup" here refers to a symbol of deep sorrow and suffering. Here it refers to Father's face being turned away from Him when He had no sin was made sin (a sin offering).
I know what is to come in the future can be difficult, come to think about it, having to be separated from dear ones is the deepest sorrow and suffering. But if this is your will, Lord, may your will be done. Wherever i am, you're with me and i believe all things are possible in You and with You.
I'd like to end this with the song "Give thanks" to express my grateful heart to our heavenly Father, who has given Jesus Christ His son to all human race.
